Portal is a term, generally synonymous with “gateway,” for a World Wide Web site that is or proposes to be a major starting site for users when they get connected to the Web or that users tend to visit as an anchor site.

At Charlestown, a separate network (CCI-Portal) is used for “headless” devices without a monitor and keyboard to use to enter a password. Instead, a device’s unique MAC address is entered into a portal database to give it permission to connect. Headless devices include smart plugs, printers, Smart TVs, Echo or Alexa devices, thermostats, lights, and vacuum cleaners. A resident (or IT on a resident’s behalf) will enter the 12-character MAC address for each device in order to add that device to the portal website. Directions are on MyErickson.
