The Media Access Control (MAC) address is given to all devices that communicate electronically. It is a unique identifier, and every device has a different MAC address. The address is normally assigned to a device when it is manufactured. The numbers as displayed consist of numbers 0 through 9 and letters A through F in a random pattern. The address is usually displayed as six pairs of characters separated by colons, for example 2A:F9:33:7B:08:EA. For the mathematically inclined, each pair of characters represents a hexadecimal (base 16) number, ranging from 0 (00) to 256 (FF).
