HDMI is a type of cable connector used to connect TV and video screens and projectors to their video and audio sources. For example, an HDMI cable is used to connect a cable box to a TV. Or in a classroom, it can be used to connect a computer (or tablet or phone with an adapter) to a big TV screen or projector such as found in Brookside Classrooms or the Conference Center at Charlestown. It largely replaced the older VGA type of connector still found in some places, such as the Charlestown Auditorium.

The HDMI specification has gone through about 10 progressive steps, beginning with HDMI 1.0 and currently at HDMI 2.1. Each step added capabilities such as faster speeds and higher resolution as the technology developed. It is important to choose a cable for the right specification if you are using 4K TV or using a sound bar or receiver with your TV. Newer cables are backwards compatible but older cables will not support the newest applications.
