It seems hard to believe that this will be my last article as the Residents’ Council president. It was a year of heartache, excitement, and accomplishments. I author this article with a heart full of gratitude. Serving as your president of the Residents’ Council has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences of my life. It has been an honor to work alongside such dedicated Council members – people who give of their time, talents, and compassion to make Charlestown stronger, more vibrant, and more connected.

I want to especially thank my Vice President, Jerry Donaldson for his expert running of the Council during my absence after my wife’s death. Jerry’s support, insight, and steady leadership have been invaluable—not only to me personally but to our entire Council and community. Thank you for your commitment and for helping to make a positive and lasting difference to this community we call Charlestown.

Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated successes, and continued to uphold the mission and values that define Charlestown. Whether it was launching new initiatives, supporting long-standing programs, or simply being there for o, every step of the journey has been built on teamwork and shared purpose., every step of the journey has been built on teamwork and shared purpose.

Leadership is never a solo effort. I want to thank each of you—executive team, committee chairs, committee members, administration, staff, and residents—for your trust, collaboration, and support. I have learned from you, grown with you, and have been continually inspired by your commitment.

My September 2024 Sunburst article talked about my theme for the year, which was sharing. The Council along with the Administration has worked tirelessly to share information openly and regularly to the community. For new residents, a weekly newsletter is provided via email which informs them of the upcoming week happenings of Charlestown. Another instance of information sharing was when residents had concern about the extension of the Short Line Trail. The Rails to Trails president brief Charlestown residents on the history as well as the extension of the trail. The briefing was so well received those residents who had concern, their concern was alleviated. This proved that sharing clear communication builds trust and helps everyone feel included and informed. Whether it is updates on community initiatives, changes in services, or opportunities for involvement, keeping residents in the loop ensures transparency and encourages active participation. When information is shared freely and thoughtfully, it not only prevents confusion and rumors, but also strengthens the spirit of cooperation that makes Charlestown such a special place to call home.

The September Sunburst article also discussed a couple of goals I set for the Council. One of these goals was to bridge the gap between independent living and continuing care. The Council started having monthly Committee meetings at Caton Woods. This allowed those residents living in Caton Woods the opportunity to attend these meeting. It also brought independent living residents to Caton Woods. These monthly meetings made for a truly integrated and supportive community. Encouraging interaction through shared programs, events, and communication helps dispel misunderstandings and promotes mutual respect. It also reassures independent living residents that, should their needs change, they will continue to be part of the same caring community. By building these bridges, we strengthen the foundation of the Charlestown community —one based on dignity, inclusion, and lifelong support.

Another goal was to move the sustainability reports on dining, grounds, and transportation to another level. These reports were authored by Council and Administration staff in early 2024. Each report had recommendations that needed committees to oversee and work with the Administration to carry out the recommendation. I am delighted to tell you that all three sustainability reports have committees comprising residents and staff to work on the recommendations. Sustainability reports play a vital role by demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility, long-term planning, and transparency. These reports highlight efforts to reduce energy use, manage resources wisely, and create a healthier living environment for residents and staff alike. They also help residents feel more connected to broader sustainability goals and reassured that Charlestown is planning thoughtfully for future generations. In addition, sharing this information encourages accountability, fosters community pride, and can even inspire innovative ideas for green initiatives from residents themselves. Sustainability reports are not just about numbers—they reflect a shared commitment to stewardship, well-being, and forward-thinking leadership.

I have one last request of the residents. Please attend the Residents’ Association Annual Meeting on August 11th at 7 PM in the Conference Center. This annual meeting will provide the residents with the Council’s accomplishments for the 2024-2025 Council year which started in September of 2024. The meeting will also have the installation of officers as well as the new Council members. So, mark your calendar!

As I now pass the baton to new leadership, I do so with confidence and excitement for what lies ahead. I know the Residents’ Council will continue to thrive, evolve, and serve with the same passion that has carried us this far.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead. I will always cherish this chapter and remain a proud and committed member of the Charlestown community.

Joe Carrick, President
Charlestown Residents’ Council 2024-2025
