When you’ve had enough cold weather, tax details, historical novels and heavy biographies, this curl-up-and-read novel is pure enjoyment.  It can clear your mind, make you laugh and give you something to think about, too.  Most of all, it’s fun!

The first of four detective novels by Richard Osman takes place in Kent County, England, at Coopers Chase, which is eerily similar to Charlestown. The book immediately became a bestseller.   Maybe that’s because there are so many of us now living in continuing-care retirement communities, the setting for his stories.

You will enjoy meeting the four main characters in this book.  They are varied, colorful, inventive, surprisingly wonderful Joyce, Ibrahim, Ron, and Elizabeth. No doubt they will remind you of some people you know.

How did these amateur detectives go from quietly solving cold cases to suddenly being involved in a very live murder?  Come along and see for yourself!

Author and humorist   Richard Osman has worked for many years in BBC television writing and presenting shows like “Survivor” and “Deal or No Deal” in the US. This novel will be made into a film.

Resident Donna Martin has lived at Charlestown for five years.  She cannot quite retire from the ministry and is generously involved in ELLIC programs and many groups.  This is her second book review.
