USB, short for Universal Serial Bus, was designed to standardize the connection of peripherals to personal computers, both to communicate with and to supply electric power. It replaced earlier interfaces such as serial and parallel ports. The plugs take various forms. The form that was used very commonly until recently for such things as thumb drives (aka memory sticks) is shown below.
The standard has developed through the years, and today has been largely replaced by the USB-C connector.
