Scholars' Program

We as a community have committed to supporting students pursuing advanced education through our Scholars’ Fund. A total of 39 Scholar Candidates have been accepted into the Charlestown Scholarship Program for 2021. This includes 35 Traditional Scholars and 4 One-Year Scholars.

To qualify as a Scholar Candidate, our student-employees must meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement and will have worked at least 1,000 hours at Charlestown by mid-May. You will see our Scholar Candidates wearing their blue “Scholar Candidate” masks as part of their uniform, and posters of the candidates have been placed around campus. Please take a moment to congratulate and encourage the Scholar Candidates as you see them in your dining rooms, throughout campus delivering your meals, and doing other tasks.

In addition to our traditional scholarships, 21 of our Scholar Candidates and current Scholars still working at Charlestown, who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, have applied for our special Named Scholarship awards. The Named Scholarships offered are the Fenton & Robb Memorial Scholarship, Andrew Murray Meyers, The Bettye Gray Memorial Scholarship, and the Treasure Sale Scholarship. Our Named Scholarships are a wonderful way to make a difference for a deserving student and to have a legacy of education for our student employees. We also continue to offer Partnership Scholarships sponsored by CCBC, Coppin State University, Towson, UMBC, and new this year, Morgan State University. The Scholars’ Committee will interview each of the 21 Applicants beginning April 5, and the recipients will be announced during the Virtual Scholars’ Ceremony on May 19th.

The Scholar Campaign continues through April 30th. Our Campaign goal is to raise $200,000 for the program and to achieve 100% participation among our residents. With everyone’s help, we know this is achievable. This is your chance to make a difference and to help change a young person’s life for the better. Campaign materials were distributed to your cubby on March 15th.

Ways to Contribute

The gift of education can be priceless, so please consider making a donation. You can make your donation to the 2021 Scholars’ Campaign via cash, check, credit card or resident account. Drop off the campaign envelope at your front desk. You can also designate a donation to be made monthly on your donation card via credit card or resident account. Contact the Philanthropy Office in Cross Creek if you need additional information. Checks may be made payable to the Scholars’ Fund. Online, you may use the My Erickson website Gift Box Donate icon for contributing to the Scholar Fund. Non-Residents can log in to the My Erickson app as a guest to donate. You may also share the link: elm.convio.net/CharlestownSCH

The Scholar Fund is funded by residents. Donations are 100% tax-deductible as allowed by law, and all monies collected are restricted to the Scholar Fund. As with our Benevolent Care Fund, some residents find it desirable to request a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) as part of their required minimum distribution (RMD) from their IRA trustee, directly to our Philanthropy Department for the Scholars’ Fund (see Lisa Zehring for details).

Any questions about the program may be directed to our Scholars’ Committee members, who are easily identifiable in our black “Scholar Committee” masks: Norma Goldberg, Roland Gray, Mel Milio, Marie Skane, Ed DeLong, Jackie Graham, Eugenia High, and Mimi O’Donnell; or contact Lisa Zehring in the Philanthropy Office at 410-737-8838 ext.8397.

Please mark your calendars for the Scholar Ceremony to be aired Wed., May 19, 2021 at 7 PM.

Thank you for supporting our Charlestown Scholars!
