The sun is bright, the humidity is rising, and we’re all reaching for the sun screen, zinc ointment and sunglasses. The recent steamy temperatures could indicate that Summer has arrived … and your favorite Summer straw hat is on its last legs.

I’m not a hat girl myself, but if you are, you’re in for a treat, because the Ladies’ boutique is currently showing a stellar selection of both pretty and practical hot weather headwear, all in beautiful condition, and many of them brand-new.

You’re very likely to find something to suit your style and protect you from those nasty UV rays whether you’re looking for a broad brimmed sunhat (a “floppy hat”), a tropical Panama beauty, or a Boater.

If your Summer look is more casual you may prefer a squashable, well-ventilated Bucket Hat … they’re perfect for traveling, or the beach, because they can be carried in a purse, beach tote or carry-on bag. And a “kettle brim” hat adds a bit of chic to your casual look; it not only keeps out the sun, but is lightweight and comfortable.

Some Summer Hat-Buying Hints:

A hat in a light color, such as white, beige, tan, or any pastel tone reflects the sun’s rays and keeps you cooler than a dark-colored one.

Many “Panama-style” hats are now made with synthetic fibers, which open up color and style options. If you like a classic and traditional women’s hat, a Panama frames your face and can be found in many colors to match your favorite vacation outfit.

Boater hats were originally designed for men, but they often have a thick ribbon around the crown. That may be why they eventually became popular with women, who often wore them with hatpins to keep them from blowing off their heads. French fashion designer Coco Chanel popularized this sporty, chic hat among the wealthy metropolitan class, and it’s a favorite to this day.
