Charlestown residents have had a great past year of bestowing kindness upon our Charlestown students and staff who have met (and in some cases exceeded) our expectations. The Charlestown Scholars’ Program is a wonderful way for residents to support student employees in their pursuit of higher education.

Much progress has been made since our wonderful Scholars Ceremony last year. This year a new special “named scholarship” will be sponsored by the Treasure Sale Committee for $2,000 a year. Also, the individual scholarship for each student will increase from $1,500 to $2,000 per year which is a commitment to each student for 4 years, as long as a 2.5 GPA is maintained and the student is in good standing.

In 2016, 145 students received scholarship checks to help offset college expenses. The student employees earn scholarships by working here for a least 1000 hours by the end of the school year and maintaining a 2.5 GPA in high school. The 2017 Scholarship application process opened on January 2 and closed January 19. Our Philanthropy Department has received 25 applications and the vetting process has begun.

Last year, 50% of all resident households gave to the Scholars’ Fund. Collectively, we have made this commitment to those who have served us well. Importantly, every resident can help us meet this financial commitment through some contribution great or small. Participation by all residents reduces the burden carried by only half. We are aiming for ALL residents to give this year. Some ideas to make it easy to contribute include: monthly deductions on your Resident Account, credit card donations (minimum $20), checks, or cash to the Philanthropy Office in Cross Creek. Donations for the Scholars’ Fund are accepted year round.

The Scholars’ Fund is 95% funded by residents. Donations are 100% tax deductible and all monies collected are dedicated to the Scholars’ Fund. All the scholarships are mailed directly to colleges and not to the student.

Please try to give; this is your chance to support opportunities that will enhance a young person’s life. The Scholars’ Fund Campaign officially begins on March 20 and continues through April 30.
