Most residents are aware of the goals and objectives of the Residents’ Association and the Residents’ Council. These residents contribute the annual voluntary dues of $2.00 or more to support the Council. However, newer residents may not be aware that all residents are automatically members of the Association and Independent Living and Assisted Living residents elect Council members to represent them within the Charlestown community.

The Council is composed of 13 standing committees, e.g. Benevolent Care, Dining, Grounds, Resident Life, Safety and Security, made up of resident volunteers who devote their time and efforts to the interests and welfare of all residents. The Council works closely with management to maintain the harmonious environment that makes Charlestown a great place to live. Although a resident might not be affected directly by the Council’s activities, all residents are affected indirectly because of the Council’s work.

The Council maintains a modest budget for supplies and occasional committee expenses such as those incurred by the Birthday Angels. Other expenses include contributions to the Staff Appreciation, Scholarship, and Benevolent Care Funds and our yearly membership in the National Continuing Care Residents Association (NaCCRA). The modest $2.00 contribution per resident covers these expenses.

Usually, April is dues collection month.  However, no dues were collected in 2021, and due to Covid-19 restrictions, dues collection in 2020 had to be postponed until October. This year, on or about April 1, a Dues Packet will be placed in the cubby of each Independent Living apartment. The packet will contain a brief letter and a return envelope, in which to place the voluntary dues payment. Cash or checks made payable to Charlestown Residents’ Council are acceptable. The Residents’ Association dues return envelope may be placed in the Campus Mail basket in any lobby or directly in the Treasurer’s cubby.  The Council certainly appreciates your support in its efforts to make Charlestown your happy home for life.
