Goal Accomplished!

Congratulations and THANK YOU Charlestown Residents! With your generous donations, we have exceeded our goal of $180,000 by raising $204,869 for the Charlestown Scholars Program. As you know, this program allows us to offer academic financial assistance to our eligible student-employees here at Charlestown.

On May 17th we celebrated our 2018 Scholar Class by awarding 29 new scholarships at our Scholars’ Ceremony. Each scholar will receive $2,000 per year, sent to their college or university to offset their academic tuition expenses.
The 2018 Charlestown Scholars are:
Hallé Anderson, Maya Ashley, Aliyah Canaday, Anyia Cannady, Amir Davis, Haris Ejaz, Krystle Fleming, Trinity Glover, Andre Gray, Samantha Hager, Sydney Hall, Lyeba Hameed, Kayla Harris, Andrew Harrison, Thanh Ho, Raven Horsey, Trevor Jones, Anugraha Joy, Alexander Lastner, Briana Laws, Briana McCallum, Malee McCarthy, Eniola Osunnuga, Qamar Rehman, Jamea Rice-Coleman, McKayla Richardson, Alger Russell, Jakayla Smith, and Raphael Stancil.

This class of Scholars will join the current 133 Charlestown Scholars, some of whom will graduate this spring.

Along with the Charlestown Scholarship, the Scholar Candidadates had an opportunity to apply for additional merit based Named Scholarships. The following Scholars received these special awards: Jamea Rice-Coleman, the Dr. Carroll Yingling Jr. Award ($1500). Alexander Lastner, the Andrew Murray Myers Scholarship ($2000) and the new 2-year CCBC Scholarship ($1000). Malee McCarthy, the Treasure Sale Award ($2000).  Anu Joy, the Committee Recognition Award ($1000). Eniola Osunnuga, in conjunction with the Charlestown Scholars Committee and Towson University, the four-year Towson Scholarship ($6000). And finally, Lyeba Hameed, the UMBC four-year joint scholarship with the University and the Charlestown Scholars’ Fund ($10,000).

We thank each of our residents who made a donation to the 30th Annual Scholar Campaign, without whom we would not be able to offer this opportunity to the student-employees that work so hard for all of us. This scholarship for some makes the difference for them in the ability to afford going to college and to continue their education. We also applaud Erickson Living and the Jim Davis Family Foundation for their continuous support of the Scholars program with a generous $5,000 contribution this year. If you did not have an opportunity to donate, but would like to, donations for the Scholar Program can be made year-round in the Philanthropy Department.

We are grateful to this year’s guest speaker, Julie Homans. Julie is a member of the 2013 Charlestown Scholars Class. Julie is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education from UMBC, and  is currently working at Charlestown as a Restaurant Supervisor in the Refectory Dining Room. She gave a superb presentation.

A special note of appreciation to my fellow 2018 Scholar Committee members: Michelle Chenoweth, Leigh Anne Cooper, Norma Goldberg, Roland Gray, Tony Hansen, Pat Kasuda, Betty Ruff, Mel Milio and Marie Skane; and to the Philanthropy Department team of Patti Santoni, Emily Fowler and Lisa Zehring.

If you were unable to attend the Scholar Ceremony on May 17th, or if you just want to enjoy it again, a taping will air on June 2 and 3 on Channel 972! Tune in at 1:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. on each day to watch this year’s ceremony. And it will be available on My Erickson for 1 month under Town Hall Meetings.
