2025 Volunteer Census Surveys: “Am I a Charlestown Volunteer?”

Please complete and return your Volunteer Census Surveys to Community Resources by Friday, March 28th to ensure that you are a registered volunteer! Previously registered volunteers will receive a survey in their cubbies, but additional surveys can be retrieved from lobbies if you did not receive one.

There are numerous reasons why we track volunteer time: (1) we are ensuring we are compliant with all state requirements, (2) it is one of the criteria to maintain Charlestown’s non-profit status, (3) it helps identify successful programs or their needs/opportunities, and (4) we use the registry to include you in volunteer recognition activities like our annual celebration!

Charlestown residents contribute to the community in so many ways that we consider volunteerism, so you might ask yourself, “Am I volunteer?” If you answer “yes” to any of the following possibilities, then YES, you are a volunteer! Do you…

Participate in a volunteer activity with a group? (E.g.: 60-Minute Visitors, CC Activities Assistants/Leaders, Birthday Angels, Treasure Sale)
Participate in a volunteer activity individually? (E.g.: Pet volunteers, wheelchair escorts)
Provide entertainment for Continuing Care and/or Intermissions? (E.g.: Piano players, singers, dancers, recorder players)
Lead or co-lead any club, group or organization?
Support a department or program? (E.g.: run 50/50 tables, ushers, clerical activities, ELLIC, Archives, Library, Sales Ambassadors)
Create items to sell and donate proceeds to Benevolent Care?
Contribute your time/talents to serve the community? (E.g.: Wood Shop repairs, indoor/outdoor cleanup, can recycling)
Contribute as a volunteer in the greater community outside of Charlestown? (E.g. Charlestown-Sandtown Connection, UMD Orthopedic and Rehab Institute)

If you have any questions or concerns about the 2025 Volunteer Census Surveys, please reach out to Allison Chlada, Volunteer Program Coordinator, at x601-8133. Thank you so much to all of our Charlestown Volunteers!

Important tips for becoming a Volunteer Superhero

Choose something that’s a good fit for you

Think about what matters to you, and be selective about where you spend your time. Choosing opportunities that make you feel good while helping other, builds stronger communities, and enriches your own life at the same time.

Learn something new

Volunteering can also teach you valuable new skills that you can use in other parts of your life. Push yourself creatively. Find something you enjoy doing and enhance your skills

Don’t over-commit your schedule

Remember all the other commitments you have in your life, and don’t burn yourself out. Stick to a volunteering schedule that makes sense for you and leaves you time to enjoy the activity.

Volunteering as a group

Group volunteering is a wonderful way to bond with your family, friends or neighbors. Not only will you create lasting memories, but you will help someone in need. The Activities Staff in our Assisted Living and Continuing Care centers can help choose a date and time for an interested group to lead an activity or entertain residents.

Create your very own volunteer activity

If you feel strongly about being a volunteer but don’t see anything on our lists of available volunteer activities, consider CUSTOMIZING YOUR OWN. Think of the skills you have to offer, your former career, the activities that YOU are passionate about. We can help you share your talent, knowledge or skills with other residents – teach a class, demonstrate a talent, give a presentation by creating a “customized” project or program.
