Going Car-free at Charlestown

The November fee increase prompted a closer look at our budget, and one big question came to mind: What are we paying for that we don’t really need? The answer was parked right outside—our car.
At 92, my husband had already stopped driving on highways, and I was growing uneasy in traffic with optional rules of the road. We realized we were barely driving 1,000 miles a year. So, when the opportunity arose, we sold our 14-year-old car and became car-free in a week.
Four months later, we’re loving it. Without the $210 insurance and $30 parking fee, we’re saving money and reducing stress. Lyft rides have cost us just over $500—nearly $450 less than what car ownership would’ve cost in that time.
Some unexpected perks of going car-free:
- Fast Lyft pickups—usually within 5–7 minutes
- Scheduled rides for doctor visits or outings
- No parking hassles—just door-to-door convenience
- Helpful shuttle drivers who make grocery trips and medical appointments a breeze
- A fresh perspective—literally! I can now enjoy the scenery
Most of all, we feel free. We’re exploring more of Baltimore than ever, from birthday weekends downtown to museum trips and brunch outings—all without the burden of parking or traffic.
Going car-free wasn’t just a financial decision—it turned out to be a lifestyle upgrade.

Continuous On-Campus Shuttle Services
View the Charlestown on-campus shuttle as it loops around the campus to find out when the shuttle will arrive at your building.

From Lobby to Lobby: Monday- Friday, 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM;
Saturday and Sunday, 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM;

On demand (before or after) hours are:
Monday – Friday – before from 6:30 – 9 AM; after from 7 – 10:45 PM
Saturday – Sunday – before from 6:30 AM – 1 PM; after from 7 – 9 PM
Stops at entrances of Fountain Hill, Courtyard Crossing (Lobby 7), St. Charles, Charlestown Square, Herbert’s Run, Cross Creek, Brookside, Caton Woods, and Wilton Overlook. Other stops, such as Auditorium or Harbor View, can be made upon specific request.

St. Agnes Hospital | Adjacent Facilities
The St. Agnes Shuttle Service is a FREE service from Charlestown, Monday – Friday (except holidays) between 8 AM – 5 PM on the hour, only. For service on the half hour or off hours, there is a sedan service fee. Prior to 8 AM or after 5 PM, there is a sedan service fee in addition to a $25 surcharge.
You MUST call shuttle dispatch at 410-737-8838 x8448 to let us know what time, on the hour, you want to be picked up at your main lobby. Call at least 24 hours in advance to ensure a seat on the shuttle, especially important if you are in a wheelchair.
From Charlestown
Monday -Friday | 8 am until 5 pm on the hour
4 pm last pick up from Charlestown
(5 pm last pick up from St. Agnes)
*Discharges from hospital or emergency room dependent on time of day & staff availability *

Sedan Service
Sedan service is available for medical ($4.50 per mile – 15 mile limit) and non-medical ($6 per mile – 10 mile limit) rides.
The fee is charged while the resident is in the vehicle. $25 fee for before/after hour requests. All rates are subject to change.
