Social Work Services at Charlestown Medical Center

As you age, your body and mind will undergo changes. In order to deal positively and responsibly with these changes, you may need additional support on a temporary or possibly permanent basis.

Social work providers are licensed and certified to assist with these adjustments. At the Charlestown medical center, they work closely with the interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and caregivers, as well as other professionals throughout the community.

What concerns does the social work provider address?

There are many concerns that can be evaluated or treated by the social work provider at Charlestown. More common matters include:

  • Counseling services for anxiety, depression, stress management, coping, cognitive changes, grief and bereavement, caregiver stresses, and more
  • Case management for complex cases at critical times of need
  • Crisis intervention
  • Advance care planning to include advance directives, living wills, financial power of attorney documents, and end-of-life decision making
  • Billable services covered by Medicare and most insurance plans

Meet Your Social Work Provider

Shannon Miller, L.C.S.W.-C.

Ms. Miller received her bachelor’s degree in social work from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland, and her master’s degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a licensed clinical social worker. Ms. Miller joined Charlestown in September 2001.
