The Scholars’ Program has been a wonderful way for residents to support student employees in their pursuit of higher education. Currently, our fund supports 135 students for $270,000. Last year, the individual scholarship for each student was increased to $2,000 per year which is a commitment to each student for 4 years provided they supply the Philanthropy office with their grades and schedule each semester.
The student employees earn scholarships by working at Charlestown for a least 1,000 hours by the time of the ceremony and must have a minimum 2.5 GPA in high school. Scholarship checks are mailed directly to the universities. In 2017, 135 students received these checks to help offset college expenses. We have 32 scholar candidates for 2018. The candidates are easily identifiable in their respective work areas by their green “Scholar Candidate” aprons.
The Scholars’ Fund is 95% funded by residents. As a community, we at Charlestown have made this commitment to those who have served us well. Importantly, every resident can help us meet this financial pledge through some contribution great or small. Last year only 52% of all resident households gave to the Scholars’ Fund. We are aiming for ALL residents to give this year!
Donations to the Scholars’ Fund are accepted all year around. Donations are 100% tax deductible, as allowed by law, and all monies collected are restricted to the fund. There are many options for your contributions: monthly deductions on your Resident Account, credit card donations (minimum $20), a check, or cash to the Philanthropy Office in Cross Creek. The Philanthropy Office accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.
Please try to give. This is your chance to enhance the educational opportunities for a deserving young person. The Scholars’ Fund Campaign officially begins on March 19 and continues through April 30. Make checks payable to the Scholars’ Fund. Please be generous, as our students deserve and appreciate it! Our goal for 2018 is to exceed the $175,000 that we raised last year. With everyone’s help, we know this is achievable.
