Charlestown July is here, and the hot, humid days of summer is upon us. So, make sure you stay hydrated. This month is an important historical month. The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, is a deeply significant holiday in the United States as it commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. On this day, the thirteen American colonies declared their freedom from British rule, marking the birth of a new nation founded on the principles of liberty, self-governance, and equality. It is a time for Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made for freedom and to celebrate the enduring values that define the country. Through fireworks, parades, patriotic displays, and family gatherings, the Fourth of July not only honors the nation’s founding but also reminds citizens of their shared history and the responsibilities of preserving democracy.

Charlestown will again participate in the Catonsville’s July 4th parade. This will be the 79th year for this parade. It is recognized as the best parade in Maryland. I hope that many residents will be able to see the parade.

July also starts the Council election season. We have 12 very qualified candidates who represent a wide range of careers such as educator, lawyer, accountant, health care to name a few. You will know the candidates by the ribbon on their badge which will say Candidate. While they are not allowed to campaign, go up to them and introduce yourself and ask them any question you may have to learn more about them. Another idea is to invite them to join you at dinner. This is a terrific way to meet the candidates.

This year’s election is on Wednesday, August 6th, so mark your calendar. If you are going to be away that day you can requests for Absentee Ballot. Such request may be made on or before July 30th. So, I hope all residents will participate in this year’s Residents’ Council election.

Also in August is the Residents’ Association Annual Meeting. This year the meeting will be held on August 11th. This Annual Meeting provides residents a report of the activities of the Association for the preceding twelve months, to thank outgoing Council members, to introduce new Council members, to install officers, and to conduct any other necessary business of the Association. This year the Residents’ Association Annual Meeting will be held in the evening at 7 p.m. in the Conference Center. Please attend this Annual Meeting to say thank you to the departing Council members who have spent the last three years working to make Charlestown a better place to live for everyone, and to welcome and support the new Council members.
