November in The Gallery serves up more than memories of the gala, live opening of the Fall Show in October; it leaves us with a Gallery filled with new work by our members that can keep our interest for months. Although we may have gobbled this feast of art when it was first offered, there is much that we can go back to and appreciate, perhaps more slowly, as the year goes on.

Meanwhile, we have, as always, a new Artist of the Month, John Oxenham. Since he has been at Charlestown, John has studied drawing and painting with Elise Brown and Joseph Cassar, stained glass with Eleanor Grieb, and photography with Betty Caldwell.  Now he has put forward a collection of his work which he is calling “Pairs.” It will be up to us to discover the reason for this title, but it will be our pleasure to visit his exhibit.

Another pleasure waiting for us in November is the monthly meeting of the Fireside Artists, on November 8 at 10:00 a.m. in the Charlestown Square Card Room.  Member Kay Buck will give us a treat we have been eagerly awaiting … a demonstration of Japanese calligraphy. This is something which Kay is uniquely equipped to present. It will increase our understanding of Japanese culture, of which this calligraphy is such an important part.

In this fascinating demonstration, Kay will show us the special ink used in this calligraphy, which she makes from water using an unusual device, as well as the rice paper she uses it on. At the end, she will take part in a question-and-answer session. Don’t miss it!
