Hello Charlestown!

The Charlestown Chapter of Knitted Knockers has been active for two years now.   We have made over 930 knitted and crocheted breast protheses   for women who have undergone mastectomies and have not had reconstructive surgery.

We currently supply three breast cancer centers in the area:  St. Agnes in Catonsville, St. Agnes in Columbia, and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Columbia.  After supplying our three cancer centers with “knockers” they need, we send the surplus to the National Knitted Knockers organization in Bellingham, WA.  The national organization then supplies knockers to over 30 countries.

At our January meeting we were visited by Stephanie Williams, the nurse navigator, who coordinates providing the knitted knockers with the patients at St. Agnes Hospital’s breast center locations.

This year we also learned that St. Agnes Hospital can use CHEMO blankets.  So, when we can, we make them – 42 inches by 42 inches.

If you would like more information about joining our group or making a donation, please contact Pat Phayer or Sherry Smith. Their contact information is in the Resident Directory.  (Monetary donations help us to buy yarn and stuffing and to send knockers to the national organization.)

Current members of our group are: Pat Phayer (Group Leader) and Sherry Smith (Assistant),  Sue Brown, Lorrie Burdick,  Margaret Eng, Karen Orsega, Norma Petersen, Toeti Poedjastoeti, Shirley Quaskey, Paula Ray, Hope Tillman, Barbara Watt, and Rosemary Wissing.
