The semi-annual meetings are now scheduled for the Charlestown Square Gallery at 11:00 am-noon in the spring and fall. Other meetings as needed.
The Maryland Continuing Care Residents Association has a Chapter at Charlestown. MaCCRA is the only organization which is solely dedicated to protecting and advancing the interests of residents of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). We support, empower, and better the lives of residents in Maryland’s continuing care retirement communities through advocacy and education. Charlestown becomes the 18th chapter in Maryland. Membership is $20 per year for an individual and $30 for a couple. The membership year is July to July.

Why Is MaCCRA Important To You?
Many residents are not familiar with MaCCRA, the Maryland Continuing Care Residents Association founded in 1993, and how the organization has improved the lives of residents in CCRCs (Continuing Care Retirement Communities). It is the only organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the interests of residents of CCRCs in Maryland. The State Department of Aging provides oversite and regulation of CCRCs.
Many of the processes that govern our CCRC are the result of MaCCRA leaders and members in conjunction with our legislative advocates, Barbara Brocato and Dan Shattuck, who are supported by our dues, working with the legislators. I want to point a few examples of legislation passed
through this advocacy:
* Established reserve accounts (25% of net cash operating expenses)
* Requires members to be a member of the CCRC governing board
* Requires that board members and residents meet annually to discuss status/future plans.
*Established a grievance policy for residents
* Requires that an annual budget be made available to residents
*Authorized visitation of family members in assisted living and skilled nursing units
These rights were just a few examples of how MaCCRA has improved the life of residents in CCRCs.
Once the Maryland Legislature is in session starting January 10, we will routinely inform you of summitted bills that affect CCRC residents.
