“Age is opportunity no less than youth itself.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
On July 4, 2026, our country turns 250 years old! Did you think that you’d live to see that day?! Who would have thought, when celebrating the bicentennial in 1976, that we would see this milestone, as well? One of the fortunate side effects of living in the USA is the in-credible quantity of research that has improved the quality of our lives (and the lives of those in other countries) and contributed to our longevity.
I have always been amazed by the circumstances which brought together so many brilliant men to plan the creation of a new nation and a working form of democracy. Has such a time ever existed before or since? They possessed such a wealth of knowledge and respect for each other’s ideas. They didn’t always agree, obviously, but were willing to listen, compromise, discuss, and hammer out the documents that have guided our country to this day. Three branches of government, each with its own unique jobs and responsibilities, provide a check on each other so that none of them should exceed its role.
Around the world, 250 years is a drop in the bucket—one moment in the larger span of time other countries have existed. Yet, when this country and this democracy were being formed, others looked on and learned. The French were influenced to aid us in our goals and to pursue a form of democracy, as well.
Let’s celebrate what was created and hope and pray to see our democracy continue. As part of that celebration, a group of us, led by our Cheers team and Charlestown banner, will join the Catonsville Fourth of July Parade by walking together in our red, white and blue tie-dyed Charlestown tee shirts. It is great fun to be a part of the spectacle of floats accompanied by the sound of the bands. It is always uplifting to hear the ap-plause and cheers for us as we hand out Charlestown trinkets to the crowds lining the sidewalks. The bus is filled for this year, so plan early to join the festivities for next year.
Community Resources has activities planned to cele- brate the Fourth of July and the 250th anniversary. Watch for brochures at the front desks and notices on the bulletin boards, Ch. 972 and My Erickson.
On Thursday, July 2, there will be a Patriotic Walking Parade from Cross Creek to the front entrance flagpole. Wear your patriotic gear and raise your flags for that walk! The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. Later in the month, the Studio Singers have planned a “Salute to the 250th!” with songs from the Revolutionary era right up to the present. That will be in the Conference Center at 7:00 p.m.
While celebrating, let us pause to remember the men and women who, during this country’s history, gave their lives so it, and we, could endure.
