Archives (Charlestown)
The Janel Douglass Digital Archives (aka: The Charlestown Archives) collects and stores digital documents, photos, DVDs and memorabilia that preserve the Charlestown’s rich history, beginning with its founding in 1983 and continuing to the present. The Archives’ records are open to Residents and Staff who are interested in knowing about or researching Charlestown’s history.

CHARLESTOWN ARCHIVES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is in the Archives?
The Archives collects digital documents, photos, videos, and memorabilia of the Charlestown Community of all resident groups & clubs, administration, and many Charlestown events, and makes them available to interested readers and researchers.
The Archives maintains an interesting collection of many biographical stories and episodes of residents and staff.
Residents and staff can research documentation of past activities, including programs, photos and videos.
History enthusiasts and authors use it as a source of information about Charlestown’s past
Chroniclers can view photos and videos of Charlestown to enrich their current works.
Clubs and organizations use the Archives as a central backup of their information such as activities, members, bylaws or other pertinent materials.
Charlestown memorabilia, historical photos and a limited number of important historical documents are on display in the Archives office.
Visit the Archives during office hours and talk with one of the volunteer staff (best to call ahead).
Make an appointment or visit during office hours and browse the electronic files.

Organizations are highly encouraged to email digital records such as minutes, proceedings and photos to the Archives for preservation. The Archives stores such records as a dependable backup for the group’s activities. Digital documents and photos should be emailed to CharlestownArchives17@gmail.com. The Archives’ files are regularly and automatically backed up to an external location.
An Archives display is maintained at the Herbert’s Run side of the bridge to St. Charles.
Archives volunteers convert personal VHS tapes to DVDs for a small donation. Contact Robert (Bob) Plummer (See Resident Directory). Suggested donations are:
$10.00 for 30 minutes or less:
$12.00 for 30 minutes to 1 hour;
$20.00 for 1 hour to 2 hours.
Projects requiring specialized handling will be priced accordingly.
No commercially produced VHS tapes are duplicated. Please note that the original quality of the VHS tape determines the quality of the resulting DVD.
(The Archives accepts cash or checks written to “Charlestown Archives.”)
Photographers
Current Archives Photographers and anyone interested in taking pictures for the Archives are invited to a short, informational meeting on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in the Fireside Gallery at 7:00 PM.
